Supporting our Local Youth

With the Port Moody Soccer Club Awards night coming up on April 6, we thought it might be a good time to talk about how we, Jessica and John, both love being involved in our local community and supporting our youth.

As you may already know, we will again be sponsoring the Port Moody Soccer Club Awards Night. Last year, we were thrilled to present the Female and Male Players of the Year – Savannah Shirley and Brad Gregory – with jerseys signed by Canada Women’s Team Captain Christine Sinclair, as well as Whitecaps tickets. We have an equally exciting gift for this year’s recipients, so stay tuned!

Part of the reason we love supporting our youth is that it is inspiring to see the dedication, drive, and hard work these young people put forth. As such, another program that combines these traits which we’ve recently had the honour of sponsoring is Odyssey of the Mind. This creative problem-solving competition teaches youth critical thinking skills and teamwork, while strongly also encouraging their creative side. This is an interesting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) endeavour like no other. We were excited to have the opportunity to partially sponsor a Port Moody team’s trip to the Odyssey World Finals in Iowa. The kids were part of an Olympics-style creative problem-solving competition with 15,000 kids from literally all over the world! Our Port Moody kids watched competition performances by, learned from, and socialize and interacted with kids from Indonesia, Germany, Mexico, Poland, and so many other countries. Local Port Moody resident and team member Amélie said, “Worlds was awesome because we got to meet people from other countries and we wouldn’t have been able to go if Mr. Grasty hadn’t sponsored us. Thank you, Mr. Grasty!” We are delighted we could help these kids make the journey!

We are also proud supporters of the Port Moody Secondary School seniors’ After-Grad program. These youth are going on to do great things and we are delighted to support them in transitioning into responsible, mature, and ethical young adults.

We’re proud of our local community and the kids of Port Moody!
