China has many popular beliefs, customs and superstitions. The Chinese, and in particular the Cantonese, take what numbers say very seriously.
The concepts of Chinese numerology play a role when it comes to the real estate market of Metro Vancouver, according to the findings of a University of British Columbia study: Lucky number eight helps boost real-estate prices.
Researchers found that addresses with “lucky” number eight are typically sold at a 2.5 per cent premium while homes with the “unlucky” number four are sold at 2.2 per cent below the average price.
The Chinese believe that the number 8 is a lucky number because the pronunciation of the number “eight” and the pronunciation of the word for “prosper” in Chinese are similar. So it follows that the number 8 has much value in the social life in China. Hence, a house number with the number 8 is a lucky sign.
But how can we overlook the number 7, which symbolizes “togetherness”. It is a lucky number for relationships. It is also recognized as the luckiest number in the West, and is one of the rare numbers that is great in both Chinese and many Western cultures.
78 in combination sound the same as “certainly easy” and “prosperous for sure” respectively in Cantonese. Several eights is considered very lucky.
So I’m going to put it out there in the hope that perhaps my clients can count their good fortune when they phone: 7 – 7 – 8 – 8 – 7 – 8 – 0 – 7 – 7 – 8 to do some business with me. ;-J
